With the start of the kale season, usually between November and March, families, friends and acquaintances as well as workforces and clubs arrange to go on so-called cabbage trips. These trips are particularly popular in Bremen and Oldenburg. These groups - easily recognizable by their handcart - often wander through the countryside with a colourful ribbon around their necks, a schnapps glass attached, singing and playing. In between, the cabbage riders fortify themselves with equally colorful, sour, clear or herbal schnapps and small snacks.

Points are collected during the hike by means of small games, which are used at the end of the party to determine the next Cabbage King or Cabbage Queen. This couple is usually given the honour of organizing the next cabbage tour.
