With its three venues HAU1, HAU2 and HAU3, HAU Hebbel am Ufer stands for current artistic positions at the interface of theater, dance and performance. In addition, music, visual arts and theoretical debates are fixed components of the program. As "Germany's most exciting theater" (tip 02/2012), HAU is also one of the most important and widely networked stages on the international stage. International co-productions and projects of the Berlin and (inter)national theater and dance scene are developed and shown here. In November 2012, HAU Hebbel am Ufer started its new season under the artistic direction of Annemie Vanackere. The artistic team she leads is looking for forms and ways of speaking in which a radically changing order of social and world political conditions finds an advanced artistic expression. Vanackere follows the direction of the previous directorships of Nele Hertling - who in the years from 1989 to 2003 developed the then Hebbel Theater from an empty venue into an internationally renowned venue within a short period of time - and Matthias Lilienthal. Under his direction, the house was voted "Theater of the Year" in 2004 and 2012 and was awarded the Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2007 for its corporate design. HAU1, the former Hebbel Theater, is architecturally considered one of the most beautiful theaters in Berlin. In HAU2 - the second largest stage of the HAU-Kombinat - productions such as "Testament" by She She Pop and "Hate Radio" by IIPM, which were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, premiered. With its approximately 100 seats, HAU3 is the smallest of the three houses and thus the ideal place for newcomers in particular to present their innovative dance and theater productions. Many directors and choreographers have launched their international careers from here. Conversely, many international artists found their way into the Berlin scene through the HAU.
