In September 1989, the Literaturhaus on Uhlenhorst opened its doors for events for the first time. Since then, the white villa on Schwanenwik has developed into the city's literary meeting place - with a wide national reach. Writers, authors, artists, philosophers, journalists and translators come together here to present their works to the public or to discuss current cultural and social issues. In the beautifully restored, late-classical house on the Outer Alster, which its owner, the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, makes available to the Literaturhaus e.V. rent-free, a home has been created for those interested in literature, who enjoy the sophisticated program and the hospitable atmosphere.

The Literaturhaus team organizes around 150 readings, panel discussions, talks and literary evenings every year. Regular series have their place here, such as the "Philosophical Café", "March & Moritz & 1 Guest" or the "Mixed Doubles". There are also multi-day festivals such as the "Nordic Literature Days" or the "Graphic Novel Days". As an organizer, the Literaturhaus Hamburg is also regularly present at other locations in the city.

The Junge Literaturhaus takes care of the next generation of readers: here literature comes alive and can be experienced - in all genres, in different formats, for children, teenagers and young adults between the ages of 5 and 25. With regular events for school classes of all levels, philosophical flights of thought for primary school classes, writing workshops, matinees, a comic project and much more.

With its magnificent Eddy Lübbert Hall and the Beletage, the inviting gastronomic offerings of the Literaturhaus Café, the bar and the excellently stocked Samtleben bookshop, the Literaturhaus is a cultural oasis where it is easy to feel at home.
