As the city's art museum, the Kunstpalast looks back on a multifaceted tradition spanning more than 300 years. As early as the mid-19th century, the Verein zur Errichtung einer Gemäldegalerie (Association for the Establishment of a Picture Gallery) was founded in Düsseldorf. Its members - citizens, entrepreneurs and artists - declare a municipal gallery to be the "real life issue of Düsseldorf". The success of the initiative becomes apparent 50 years later: in 1913, the art museum becomes a reality. The first director, Karl Koetschau, set himself the goal of bringing art closer to as many Düsseldorfers as possible. Based on its history, the Kunstpalast sees itself as a civic museum that addresses and welcomes all the people of its city.
