In the location's words:

Palace founder Ernst August spent large sums on exotic plants and had an orangery built that represented the importance and wealth of a Baroque court. In its heyday, the orangery was home to hundreds of bitter orange trees. Pomegranates, figs and coffee trees were also cultivated here. In winter and spring, changing presentations of the important plant collection take place in the Long House. A small exhibition on garden culture in Belvedere can be seen in the Gardener's House.

The current orangery ensemble was completed in the middle of the 18th century. The Orangery Square includes the Gardener's House, the Orangery wings, the New and Long Houses behind them and the Red Tower.
