Of course, Münster Castle is a must-see when visiting Münster. The building is a great starting point for a stroll through the streets of the city center. There are numerous sights in the immediate vicinity of the palace that you should definitely plan some time to visit.
From prince-bishop's residence to university
Münster Palace was a prince-bishop's residence until 1803. The architect Johann Conrad Schlaun built the baroque building for Münster's penultimate prince-bishop Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels.
The 91-metre-long three-winged complex with a five-axis central risalit is elegantly designed thanks to the use of red brick and light sandstone. The castle was badly damaged by bombs in 1945, but between 1947 and 1953 it was rebuilt according to old plans, at least in its outer appearance.
