The Cinémathèque Leipzig, founded in 1991, sees itself as a venue for cultural and social engagement with and about film—across all art forms. We screen current theatrical releases, selected films in (new) thematic and artistic contexts, curated film series, and experiments at the boundaries of cinema, accompanied by film talks, discussions, introductions, and exhibitions. All films are shown, whenever possible, in their original language with subtitles. In addition to our headquarters at Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 109, we are active at variousvenues.

As a collective and network-based platform, we strive for participatory, emancipatory collaborations and critical perspectives. We offer other actors, institutions, and individuals the opportunity to work with us on theme-based projects and to develop initiatives together.

It is important to us that guests and staff have access to our events that is largely free from repression and barriers, regardless of any potential limitations, social or economic situation, gender, or sexuality. We view nationalities and cultural backgrounds as constructs that must be questioned. In terms of our program and content, we focus on artistic, political, and utopian self-empowerment.

The Cinémathèque Leipzig has already received numerous awards for its dedicated program. In 2020, among other honors, it received two national top prizes for the best film program: the“Lotte Eisner Prize”fromthe Kinematheksverbund – Deutsche Kinemathekand the“Gilde Film Prize”fromAG Kinoand theCentral German Media Fundfor alternative venues. In 2021, 2022, and 2023, the Cinémathèque was once again honored for its program bythe Kinematheksverbund,AG Kino, and theMDM.

The Cinémathèque Leipzig is a member ofthe Federal Association for Municipal Film Work,AG Kino,andtheHauptverband Cinephilie.

The Cinémathèque Leipzig is supported by an association organized primarily by volunteers.

The Cinémathèque is funded by:
- the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism. This institution is co-funded by tax revenues based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
- the City of Leipzig
- the Saxon volunteer support program “Wir für Sachsen.” This initiative is also co-financed by tax revenues based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
