The original French idea of the Fête de la musique is an informal celebration of the musical way of life worldwide. Every year on the day of the summer solstice, amateur musicians of all genres in particular, but of course also professionals, are called upon to live out their joy of playing and to find and inspire their audience throughout the city.

The Fête de la musique was launched in Leipzig in 2012 by a number of musico-francophiles from the German-French Society in Leipzig, the Institut français, Moritzbastei and WERK2.
