Berlin is located in the East: For centuries, the German capital—whose origins once lay in small Slavic settlements along the sandy riverbanks—has been a place where people have written, sung, and spoken in a wide variety of Central and Eastern European languages.

Numerous important cultural works from these cultures have been and continue to be created in multiple languages in Berlin—and influential artists, writers, and musicians from a wide variety of Eastern cultures and languages have always lived here: Berlin was and remains a diverse hub of European intellectual life.

Important thinkers and leading figures from Central and Eastern Europe continue to shape Berlin’s cultural life to this day. The aim of our OSTPOL BERLIN Festival is to highlight their influence, give voice to their current perspectives and themes, and to re-examine and redraw the connections between the past and the present, between East and West.
