The Cologne Philharmonic Choir, which today has around 80 members, was founded in 1947 by Prof. Philipp Röhl and has regularly performed choral works from various eras ever since. In addition to the well-known great works of choral literature from Bach to Britten, rarely performed works by Honegger, Szymanowski, Suter, Suppé, Dupré and Kodály have also found a place in the choir's repertoire.

From 1990 to 2023, the musical direction of the Philharmonic Choir was in the hands of Prof. Horst Meinardus - a continuity that was noticeable in the quality of both the rehearsals and the performances. The high musical standards of the large oratorio choir can only be fulfilled through the special commitment of each member. This includes intensive rehearsals throughout the year, supplemented by rehearsal weekends and voice training.

In October 2023, Nico Köhs took over the direction of the Philharmonic Choir. Under his direction, the choir is modernizing itself through a broader programme - often addressing socially relevant topics - through a very lively concert activity in the Cologne/Bonn region and through a new sound culture combined with a great joy in making music.
