Between museum and exploratorium - a museum with a difference

At the Design Museum in Essen, everything is a little different from "normal" museums: once a year, the entire exhibition changes - namely when the winners of the Red Dot Award: Product Design, one of the most important international design competitions, are announced. The decision as to which products receive an award is made by around 40 design experts who come to Essen once a year to examine the products, discuss them and finally make their decision. These products are then presented in the Red Dot Design Museum for almost a year. With around 1,600 products from all over the world, the museum presents the largest exhibition of contemporary design in the world. Many of the products on display can also be touched and tried out. Another special attraction of the museum is that the design products are presented against a historical industrial backdrop, as the building is part of the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site.
