SPIELART Theater Festival

SPIELART is a festival for contemporary theater forms from Germany and abroad. It questions theater as an art form, constantly exploring and re-founding it from its margins. SPIELART creates sustainable relationships with local and international artists and is actively committed to the promotion of young talent and the structural improvement of international theater production.

In 15 festival editions to date, SPIELART has presented more than 500 productions, performances, lectures and installations - many of them German premieres or world premieres. Many of the artists and theater collectives that were still unknown at the time can now be found on the stages of important European theaters and festivals. These include Stefan Kaegi / Rimini Protokoll, Forced Entertainment, She She Pop, Gob Squad, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Philippe Quesne and Toshiki Okada.

Founded in 1995 by Tilmann Broszat and Gottfried Hattinger, the festival has been under the joint direction of Tilmann Broszat and Sophie Becker since 2017, who finally took over the artistic and festival management for the 2021 edition.

The city as a stage

Every two years, SPIELART transforms the city of Munich into a stage for an intensive examination of current socio-political issues. Originally founded as a counter-project to the established programs of the city and state theaters of the time, the festival has long been anchored in the cultural life of the city and is in a lively dialogue with its artistic actors and cultural institutions.

Unusual event formats provide Munich audiences with diverse access to the festival program: participatory urban projects such as CITYWORKS (2013), GLOBAL ANGST (2021) or GGGNHM - guggenheim in münchen? (2023) and the festival center as a place to linger, for exuberant parties and concerts invite you to become part of the SPIELART community.
