Joseph Garncarz is a professor at the Institute for Media Culture and Theater at the University of Cologne. His main research interest is film and media history. He has worked at various universities in Europe, led several research projects and published a number of monographs, particularly on the history of film and cinema in Germany, including Maßlose Unterhaltung. On the Establishment of Film in Germany 1896 - 1914, Hollywood in Germany. On the Internationalization of Cinema Culture 1925 - 1990 andChanging Preferences. On the Film Preferences of Europeans 1896 - 1939. His publications have been translated into English, French, Czech and Polish. His research has been funded by the German Research Foundation, among others, and was awarded the Willy Haas Prize in 2011.
