Hiking with a view of mules!

Mountain tour on the Zwiesel in the Chiemgau Alps

A mountain tour to the Zwiesel in the Chiemgau Alps is particularly worthwhile in the summer months, as the path to the top is very shady for a long time thanks to the deciduous forest. 🌳 The ascent is initially flat and uphill. After crossing a forest road, it becomes a little steeper until you turn left onto the "Mulisteig". And yes, if you're lucky, you might actually see a few mules (mules) there. 👁️🍀

Altitude difference: 1,000 m

Ascent: 2.5 hours

Descent: 1.5 hours

Demand: The Zwiesel is a rather easy mountain tour despite the almost 1,000 meters in altitude. A little surefootedness is only required on the path between the mountain pasture and the summit. 🥾

Starting point: Jochberg parking lot

🚗 Via the A8 towards Salzburg - Siegsdorf exit - Continue via Inzell to Weißbach - Then turn left towards "Ortsteil Jochberg"

🚂 Take the Meridian in the direction of Salzburg to Freilassing - Continue with the regional train to Bad Reichenhall - Take the RVO bus in the direction of Inzell to the "Weißbach Alpenhotel" - From there you walk about 1 hour along Jochbergstraße to the parking lot.

We've all been there: when you're out and about in the mountains on a really hot summer's day, there's nothing you want more than to cool off in the lake from midday onwards. ☀️ If you decide to go on a mountain tour to the Pendling near Kufstein, you can do just that afterwards - in beautiful Lake Thiersee. What's more, despite its low altitude, the Pendling impresses with a fantastic panoramic view.

Altitude difference: 600 hm

Duration of the round trip: 3.5 hours

Demand: Easy hike that does not require a high level of experience. It is therefore also easy to do with children.

Starting point: Start at the hiking parking lot at Gasthof Schneeberg in Thiersee.

The Hirschhörnlkopf in Jachenau particularly appealed to us, as the way back is different to the way up - so you can't get more variety than that. 🏞️ The circular tour covers an elevation gain of approx. 750 m and offers a wonderful view of Lake Walchensee.

Altitude difference: 750 hm

Duration of the round trip: 4 hours

Difficulty: Easy to manage with a good level of fitness.

Dürnbachhorn crossing

On a sunny weekend, it can get pretty crowded in Munich's local mountains. Our tip: drive a little further - specifically to the Chiemgau Alps. The Dürrnbachhorn crossing from the Winklmoosalm has pretty much everything you need for a good mountain tour: a varied circular route, plenty of places to stop for refreshments with delicious hut snacks 🥨 and, of course, spectacular views. If you want to shorten the tour, you can also use the nostalgic cable car (€12 per person!) for the ascent or descent.

Altitude difference: 630 hm

Ascent and descent: 4 hours

Difficulty: For the Dürrnbachhorn crossing, you should definitely be sure-footed and have a head for heights.

Starting point: Seegatter parking lot

🚗 Via a toll road up to the Winkelmoosalm. The toll costs 7 euros including parking.

🚂 With the Meridian to Traunstein - Continue with the RB to Ruhpolding and then by bus to Seegatter.

If you decide to go hiking on the Wank, you are in for a treat. 🏔️ In addition to 10/10 panoramic views of the Wetterstein mountain range, including the Zugspitze and Alpspitze, there are two cozy summit huts (Sonnenalm and Wankhaus) and plenty of benches to enjoy a picnic.

With its 1100 meters of altitude, the tour can certainly be a sporting challenge. Nevertheless, the ascent and descent are absolutely doable in one day. And if your legs do give out, you still have the option of taking the Wankbahn cable car to enjoy the view from a comfortable seated position. 🚠
