No work could sound more festive to kick off our new season than George Frideric Handel's Fireworks Music. The suite with its dance movements already caused a sensation at its premiere in the spring of 1749. Franz Liszt composed a dark fantasy for piano and orchestra over the famous "Dies irae" (Wrath of God) in his "Dance of Death" (1847-53).
Through the ritual fire dance in Manuel de Falla's "El amor brujo" (The love spell), the ballet's protagonist attempts to drive away the spirit of her jealous lover. The Andalusian composer's piece brings Spanish color and fiery rhythms together with impressionistic orchestral colors - at first restrained, gloomy, then brilliant.
Hugo Wolf's "Der Feuerreiter" (1888), the setting of the text of the same name by Eduard Mörike (1804 - 1875), tells the gruesome story of the fire rider.
As Richard Strauss ' first symphonic poem,"Macbeth" (1886 - 1888) is in no way inferior to his later works. It treats Shakespeare's subject matter with a large orchestral ensemble in difficult, effervescent but also restrained orchestral parts.
