On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of GEDOK, the installation NETZ-WERKE - "sichtbar_unsichtbar" by the two Heidelberg artists Barbara Guthy & Soana Schüler is currently taking place in the courtyard of the Kurpfälzisches Museum. They explore the central question "How visible are women in art?" and make reference to networking opportunities in the women artists' association GEDOK, which was founded 100 years ago. With their installation, they build a bridge to burning issues such as Female Gaze, Say Her Name and the Gender Pay Gap.
To accompany the installation, we will be showing the documentary "KUSAMA: INFINITY" about Yayoi Kusama, the most successful female artist in the world today. Following the screening, we invite you to a discussion with the two artists Barbara Guthy and Soana Schüler.
Yayoi Kusama is the most successful living artist in the world today. But she had to overcome countless hurdles before her radical artistic visions gained worldwide attention. The trauma of growing up in Japan during the Second World War, life in a dysfunctional family, sexism and racism in the art world and, last but not least, a mental illness always made her an outsider. Despite all this, Kusama created an enormous legacy, ranging from paintings, sculptures and installations to poetry and novels. Her exhibitions with the world-famous Infinity Mirror Rooms and Polka Dots are attracting record numbers of visitors around the world, while she herself never tires of adding new works to her wondrous universe.
KUSAMA: INFINITY is a sensitive portrait of an incomparable artist, tracing her life dedicated to art through and through over a period of more than six decades. Director Heather Lenz tells the inspiring story of a courageous trailblazer who, against all odds, succeeded in realizing her uniquely creative vision.
