11. Krimifestival Erfurt - Frank Willmann: Balkanblut
In the organizer's words:
The life and death of the Serbian mafioso and warlord Arkan
Where are the roots of evil? Few stories revolve around this question as much as that of Arkan, the godfather of the Balkans. Arkan, whose real name is Željko Ražnatović, stands for one of the most blatant gangster careers in Europe. From smiling bank robber to feared warlord, from secret service hitman to tabloid star - he was the perpetrator, symbol and mirror of a decaying society. "Balkan Blood" is more than a biography. It is a narrative examination of the abysses of power, violence and myth. Frank Willmann weaves historical facts, eyewitness accounts and pop-cultural reflections into a dark documentary about nationalism, criminality and the glorification of evil.
Frank Willmann, born in Weimar in 1963, left for West Berlin in 1984. Together with Anne Hahn, he has published several non-fiction books dedicated to the reappraisal of subcultural movements in the GDR. He writes for various newspapers and magazines and is a member of the Academy for Football Culture. His last book "Der Pate von Neuruppin" was a bestseller and was critically acclaimed.
