The guest on this live episode is Bijan Djir-Sarai.
Djir-Sarai came to North Rhine-Westphalia from Iran as a young boy. He was brought to safety before the Islamic Revolution. As an adult, he therefore joined the FDP, which for him embodied the values of personal freedom. He rose through the ranks of the party and made a name for himself as an expert on the Middle East. At one point, he even served as the party’s secretary-general. He was defeated twice in federal elections as an FDP candidate; he is now the treasurer of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district and works to alleviate the financial hardships facing nearly all municipalities. Meanwhile, his expertise on the Middle East conflict remains in high demand. Despite all these difficulties, he believes that democracy can emerge from the crisis stronger than before. He discusses this optimism with Christoph Ullrich.
