Giuseppe VerdiOverture to “La Forza del destino”
Sergei ProkofievConcerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16
Edward Elgar“Falstaff”—Symphonic Study in C minor, Op. 68
Soloist: Christopher Park (piano)
Conductor: Christopher Lichtenstein
An evening full of fate, energy, and empathy with Verdi, Prokofiev, and Elgar: Giuseppe Verdi’s Overture to *La forza del destino*, which begins with a fateful drumroll and oscillates between dark tension and passionate intensity, opens the concert. Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, by contrast, enters into a different kind of drama: energetic, virtuosic, and unexpectedly profound. Christopher Park takes on the piano part, which becomes the stage for a mental and physical struggle full of irony, passion, and brilliance. Edward Elgar’s *Falstaff* transports us into the world of Shakespeare’s hero. The work is a highly nuanced exploration of age and wisdom, humor, and melancholy. Elgar paints the portrait of a man who is human in his weakness and great in his imperfection.
