30 years of Rookie Records - the world is celebrating!
And so, of course, are we here in Freiburg, where the fine label found its home as a sub-label of Flight13 Records from 1999 to 2005.
What began as an emergency solution - because Jürgen Schattner couldn't find a label for his own band - quickly became an insider tip and is now firmly anchored and established as a label, publisher and promotion partner in the (post-)punk and indie scene.

We celebrate this with bands from the very beginning, fresh newcomers, friends & fellows.

PALES
First of all, there's a feeling that post-punk has reached saturation point, with a plethora of bands content to recycle the same gimmicks and poses as their predecessors. Fortunately, Pales does not fall into this category. With this band, you can catch a glimpse of the trends that are emerging for guitar music beyond mere imitation.
The title of the EP "The Crush" perfectly illustrates this desire to fuse influences from noise, soul, pop and industrial music to create edgy tracks.

The band's working method, which alternates between improvised studio sessions and live experiments, allows them to find the best possible form for each song - and it works wonderfully.

Célia's sprechgesang grabs you immediately. It's as if Florence Shaw from Dry Cleaning suddenly feels like biting your leg. The guitar waves drive the rhythm forward and give the powerful chorus real momentum.
Crush delivers what the title promises: the determination to conquer the world with feedback, coupled with the irresistible urge to fall under the spell of this band with a promising future. (La Vague Parallèle - Mathias Valverde)

"Expect the unexpected." The motto of Tomi Ungerer, the enfant terrible from Strasbourg, seems to have been written for Pales: The band explodes every genre classification with a raw and visceral style in which indus, noise and pop collide in a sonic battle.
The stage is a playground where trance becomes unstoppable and breathless, constantly pushing the boundaries of chaos. The sound hits, hypnotizes, triggers spasms, awakens the smell of acid, cosmetics and burnt rubber.
Pales choreographs shadows and romances of a new sonic youth that sneaks into your head and never leaves.
Her latest EP "CRUSH" was released in February 2025.

KICK JONESES
What does ... actually do?
A popular category when it comes to digging up formerly well-known personalities once again and - at least for a moment - bringing them into the public eye.
This question becomes a little more complicated when you ask it about Kick Joneses.
Why?
This band formed in 1991 from what can, without exaggeration, be called a punk legend:
The Walter Elf, one of the definitive punk bands of the 1980s, which not only causes musicians like Thees Uhlmann to have sentimental outbursts of emotion even today.
As people are generally skeptical of change and the common punk differs little from other bourgeois in this respect, Kick Joneses never received the attention that Walter Elf enjoyed, although the successor project is musically so much more inspired, so incomparably more varied, sophisticated and complex.
But let's not get excited about the musical ignorance of the masses, let's just be happy that these people went their own way and didn't succumb to the success and a certain hysteria of the time.

Here, six musicians rummage through the grab bag of their musical past (Beatles, 70s bubblegum pop, new wave, post-punk) on the one hand, and draw inspiration from more recent developments (Britpop, neo-rock 'n roll, Hamburg School) on the other. Of course, their own punk rock past flashes through here and there. The result: never plagiaristic, always Kick Joneses.

THE JACKSON POLLOCK
Emily and Davide are the explosive duo The Jackson Pollock from Bologna!
In times of "plastic" music, they are one of the most sincere bands ever, without artificial embellishments, without poses, just themselves and pure music; at their concerts you never have the feeling of déjà vu, because their style is unique, fresh and powerful.

With the drums boldly placed in the foreground, Emily lets her pieces collide as if she were playing an entire orchestra. Each song is like a new tribal dance, her vocals are mesmerizing.
Davide fills the air with noise and riffs, an imperfect geometry that spins like a spiral of fuzz tones and overdriven signals.
As they play, you can almost see a thin red string connecting them.
What we hear are their untold stories.
Using something akin to telepathy, they speak a secret language of sounds, telling each other stories about the past, the future, love and hate and everything in between, spreading infectious positive energy.

The story begins when Emily picked up a pair of drumsticks from a garbage can at a rehearsal, held them in her hands for the first time and played as if it was her destiny. With no plans, they quit their jobs, threw their daily lives out the window, loaded up their van with a drum kit, a guitar and an amplifier and embarked on a long journey across Europe, just playing: They did what came most naturally to them as musicians.

After a series of short releases, TODAY FOREVER is the first full album from "the Jackson Pollock", by Rookie Records.
Here there is enough time to reveal their heart through the 12 tracks immortalized on it, to let their emotions soar and bring the listener closer; a vortex that weaves together life and disobedience, the will to fight against all odds and the waiting for a wish to be fulfilled, two opposing souls, a heavy and a light side, the darkness and a ray of hope, snake heads coming from the same body.

Without following trends and without trying to appeal to a niche, their references are old arcade video games and Asian dramas that create their personal mythology. They create their own popular folk anthems and fascinations, combine HC violence with Latino rhythms and ride chaos like a dragon.
This unique blend escapes reality towards a parallel universe built on fantasy, but there is a clear sense that this fairy tale becomes real when played with all their might like there's no tomorrow.
