"With the clarinet concerto, I had a certain association from the piece ʻOrpheus Descendingʼ by Tennessee Williams: Bird with no feet sleeps on the wind' - the image of a bird that has no feet and cannot land and therefore sleeps on the wind. For me, that was an incredibly powerful image of individual freedom, when you don't even have to have traction to sleep."

Composer Thorsten Encke translated this image into a fascinating tonal language in which the clarinet - interpreted by our Philharmoniker's principal clarinettist Ishay Lantner - "sometimes with determination, sometimes with charm, sometimes with sweetness" (Encke) has to assert itself against the orchestra.

Individual freedom also played an important role for Beethoven . Together with a large number of Kiel vocal ensembles, we are now finally making up for the birthday choir festival for him that was already planned for 2020 - introduced by the Coriolan Overture,
which Erkki-Sven Tüür's "Phantasma" also refers to. Fantastic!
