Lee Yaron, investigative journalist and playwright, has written a book that attempts to create the "protocol of an attack": "Israel, October 7.
October". But it is far more than a protocol. Lee Yaron has conducted interviews with survivors of the brutal attack carried out by Hamas in 2023. She has spoken to relatives of those murdered and abducted, quoting the last messages they received from their parents, children and friends. According to the SZ, Yaron's book is already one of the most important documentaries in literary history, which also reminds us of the horrific consequences for Palestinians.
Lee Yaron was born in Tel Aviv in 1994, worked there for the daily newspaper Haaretz, which continues to be critical of the government, now lives in New York and uses her work to campaign for marginalized groups. With this book, she creates a literary memorial to the victims of Hamas and gives dignity back to the people whom the terrorists wanted to take away by telling their stories. Writer Sandra Gugić talks to Lee Yaron about the day of the catastrophe and the question of how to tell about it. Gugić has lived in Israel herself, including in October 2023. Together with Lily Shehady and Sarah Sassoon, she has tried to describe everyday life between fear, confusion, resignation and hope in the literary space with the book "The InBetween" and to maintain a conversation that remains in solidarity and appeals to humanity despite everything and for everyone. On this evening, Birgitta Assheuer will read from the German translation of "Israel, October 7".
