77 AUFHOCKER

An Aufhocker is a tormenting spirit that haunts travelers in the forest at night. Sometimes taking the form of a child, sometimes an old man, and sometimes an animal, this shape-shifter* leaps onto people from behind and grows heavier with every step. It is related to the will-o’-the-wisp and the vampire, but also to the earworm, the nightmare, and the Kraxe. The Aufhocker cannot stand the bright sound of bells, nor the morning light. Disappointed, it falls off and retreats—for the time being.
