With his new, self-titled album,Albrecht Schraderhas once again created a piece of music that seeks its own resonant space. Known for his stylish blend of timeless pop sounds and contemporary lyrics, the Hamburg native proves once again—with a touch of humor but certainly without cynicism—that he is a composer and lyricist with a keen sense of his own time, and to some extent, of the times that came before. It is, in the best sense of the word, unpretentious and pleasant music—if such a thing still exists. And a masterfully crafted highlight in the artist’s discography to date.

For the “Dauphin” of German-language songwriters masterfully covers the entire spectrum of musical composition on his fifth studio album. His background as an orchestra conductor is audible in the artfully balanced, well-tempered arrangements. Even though it’s a dwindling genre in the local music scene, Schrader proves that organic sounds, real instruments, real voices without Auto-Tune, and tracks at normal speed can trigger just as much dopamine. Listening to it brings about a very special kind of satisfaction. Perhaps it’s the coherence, perhaps the harmonies, or a secret third element thatAlbrecht Schraderwill never reveal—or will only do so in an exclusive interview for a hefty sum. The fact is, there’s no one else quite like him in this country.

“Albrecht Schrader”begins with a sublime chord. “Die Musik beginnt” begins, and what follows are nine more songs. Ten is indisputably the best number of tracks for an album; attentive listeners will have already noticed this in his previous releases. Whereas his last record was almost a disco moment, Schrader is now refocusing more on the craft of pop, classically orchestrated with piano, warm synths, and rather soft drums—actually even softer than “Soft” from 2023. Schrader has retained his joy in beautiful sound. And with each new release, that joy seems to grow even more. The upbeat “Wofür die Liebe sich noch lohnt,” the bittersweet “Zwanzig Jahre Nikotin,” or the laid-back track “Ich lese was hinein” about the ambiguities of human encounters —Albrecht Schraderis either the coolest guy in the bar or the most rock-and-roll guy in the concert hall, and both roles suit him perfectly.

Nevertheless,“Albrecht Schrader”also conveys a kind of worldly melancholy, always moving on the blossoming side of life, even in moments of doubt. As in “Ist Musik noch unser Ding,” which features an almost anthem-like gathering of current German pop artists facing an identity crisis. Alongside Schrader, the album features Saskia Lavaux, Das Paradies, Resi Reiner, Rocko Schamoni, Malonda, Nicola Rost, and finally Dirk von Lowtzow. So is music still their thing? The question posed by the closing chorus remains unanswered. What remains is the hope and the quiet certainty that there isn’t much better out there to weather the storms of the present. In this sense,“Albrecht Schrader”is also music for music’s sake, a tribute to his own craft.

The catchy lyrics only reveal their meta-level after you’ve hummed along three times—so skillfully woven areSchrader’ssubtle, sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholic observations of everyday life thatheslips them right under his audience’s radar. As if he’d signed some sort of chivalric code of honor, his verbal jabs are so subtle that those on the receiving end—such as the city of Hamburg (“I’m not sure if it’s Hamburg’s fault”)—might even feel flattered at first. That’s just how it is with multifaceted art. It can be enjoyed in many ways. Yes,Albrecht Schraderrebels while sitting. But not out of laziness, rather out of the wise foresight that this can be sustained for longer. And because that’s how he plays the piano best.
