Joining him are old friends from the La Pochette Surprise scene: Martin (Swutscher) on drums, Christian (Dunya) on bass, Obi on synth, and Julian on lead guitar.

The metaphor of mutilation sets the literary and musical tone. The collage technique reflects a fragmented experience of reality—first poetic early Romanticism, then dehumanized Expressionism. Between “Flowers and Sunshine” and “My-less-nerves-are-full-of-fear-and-crying”—country and folk dissolved in the roar of monotonous Krautrock riffs, drifting off into spacey synths and feedback noise. Plus: lively booze-fueled jams and psychedelic bossa nova. The enemy of the poetic worldview is and always has been alienated labor: the invincibility of capitalism mutilates the subject. The result is fragmented country melancholy: NoCountry!

Particularly interesting is the enigmatic accent inJoe Astray’s vocals, which can never be pinpointed to a specific geographic location. The former singer of the Hamburg band fluppe taught himself everything in true DIY fashion and, through regular touring, has mastered the essence of making music. Influences range from The Eels and Leonard Cohen to the sardonic, socially critical humor of Billy Bragg, yet there is clearly a distinct punk rock DNA in Joe Astray’s work. The name says it all, for Joe Astray is everyone and no one at the same time—a songwriter for the landless and dispossessed, a walking enigma who defies categorization, and who, despite all the darkness, still holds aloft a candle of hope.
