Ali*ne B*enecke / Princela Biyaa: Diasporisches Erinnern an Fasia Jansen

In the organizer's words:

Film screening & discussion:
"Are you not allowed to be so self-centered and keep your experiences to yourself? Diasporic remembrance of Fasia Jansen"

Fasia Jansen was a German singer and activist, a figure of black, queer, anti-fascist and anti-capitalist resistance. Artist Ali*ne B*enecke rehearsed some of her songs in memory of her with the newly founded Fasia Jansen Ensemble. The film "Darf man etwa nicht so egozentrisch sein (...)" shows the ensemble with interpretations of Fasia's songs on the grounds of the Glienecke Castle Park on Berlin's Wannsee, a historical site of German history marked by colonial and fascist crimes and the division of powers during the Cold War. Benecke asks us: How do we as a diaspora want to remember Fasia Jansen? How do we establish a relationship through our bodies, which are an archive and resonance chamber for Fasia Jansen's history?" The Fasia Jansen Ensemble brings the spirit of the folk singer to life in a community-based, Black and diasporic tradition. Ali*ne B*enecke's film combines the powerful performance of the choir with original vocal recordings of Fasia evoking the power of solidarity from a contemporary queer Black perspective and finding a place in current political movements, German institutions and collective memories.

"With my performances, films, texts and installations, I want to enter into conversation with and address marginalized people who have suffered fascist and colonial violence. (...) My methods focus on embodied experiential knowledge, especially with regard to diasporic practices that have strengthened the resilience of marginalized and diasporic people over decades."(Ali*ne B*enecke)
