ALL HANDS ON: Flechten

In the organizer's words:

ALL HANDS ON: Braiding

May 24, 2022 until further notice

Opening: Sunday, May 22, 202

Braiding - a cultural technique, thousands of years old, practiced worldwide, regionally distinctive and still today handwork in the truest sense of the word: Only man masters the complex braiding technique, no machine can replace him. The exhibition focuses on the fascination of this skill and shows the interconnections between historically grown knowledge and modern innovations.

In the four exhibition areas Man, Protection, Material and Pattern, visitors can discover numerous woven everyday objects from all over Europe from the extensive collection of the Museum of European Cultures. A walk-in room sculpture by the artist Olaf Holzapfel and other international, contemporary art and design positions that deal with various braiding techniques offer complementary perspectives.

The individual themes are linked with numerous interactive stations that allow museum visitors to haptically experience the intangible cultural heritage contained in woven objects. So - ALL HANDS ON: Braiding!

A special exhibition of the Museum of European Cultures - National Museums in Berlin in cooperation with CARMAH and the European Ethnology program of the Humboldt University in Berlin, the European Media Studies program of the University of Potsdam and FH Potsdam as well as the Gardening School Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

Supported by the Friede Springer Foundation and the Association of Friends of the MEK.
