ADHD does not end in childhood. Many adults live for years with symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, impulsivity, or inner restlessness—without a diagnosis. While ADHD was long considered a so-called “childhood disorder” and remained underdiagnosed in adulthood—causing significant distress for those affected who did not receive adequate help— public awareness of ADHD in adults has risen sharply in recent years. According to Google Trends, search volume for the term “ADHD” in Germany has more than tripled between 2020 and the end of 2024. This trend is accompanied by an increase in self-diagnoses and gives the impression of a rapidly growing prevalence of the condition. Is this true? This presentation will explain how ADHD manifests in adulthood and how it can be diagnosed, why the condition is often recognized so late, and which therapeutic strategies can help in managing the condition.

Guest Speaker:

Prof. Dr. Silke Lux, Senior Psychologist at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Bonn
Her research focuses on gender-specific manifestations and multimodal therapeutic approaches for ADHD in adulthood.

About the lecture series:
All About... Anxiety, Depression, ADHD in Adults, and Schizophrenia
A lecture series in cooperation with the Chair of Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience at TU Dresden

Anxiety disorders, depression, and ADHD are not only among the most common mental health conditions in Germany; they also sometimes occur together. More than half of mental health conditions begin in childhood, but the symptoms differ significantly among children, adolescents, and adults. As a result, childhood depression, for example, is rare and often not diagnosed until late in life, while conversely, many cases of ADHD in adulthood go undiagnosed because it was long considered a “childhood disorder.” Furthermore, about 70 percent of adults with ADHD also suffer from other mental health conditions—most commonly anxiety disorders and depression.
The fourth session focuses on schizophrenia. Although it occurs relatively rarely, it is of great significance due to its impact on those affected, their families, and their participation in society.
In four one-hour sessions, experts will provide in-depth insight into the latest findings regarding the causes, symptoms, treatment options, and treatment outcomes for these four conditions.
