Alles über … Depressionen

In the organizer's words:

  • Lecture in cooperation with the Department of Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience at TU Dresden

Depression is more than just a low mood; it is an illness that profoundly affects how we think, feel, and act. It can affect anyone, even though symptoms vary from person to person and differ depending on age and gender, and can range in severity. Rarely can people overcome the illness on their own without help. Depression tends to run in families, which is why examining family relationships is particularly important for developing preventive and treatment strategies. This lecture explains how depression develops, what forms it takes, and why early treatment is so crucial. It will also present current therapeutic approaches and options for support.

Guest Speaker:

Prof. Dr. Katharina Förster, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy at the University of Hamburg
Her research focuses on affective disorders, particularly depression and bipolar disorder, and she runs a family outpatient clinic for affective disorders.

About the lecture series:
All About... Anxiety, Depression, ADHD in Adults, and Schizophrenia
A lecture series in cooperation with the Chair of Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience at TU Dresden

Anxiety disorders, depression, and ADHD are not only among the most common mental health conditions in Germany; they also sometimes occur together. More than half of all mental health conditions begin in childhood, but the symptoms differ significantly among children, adolescents, and adults. As a result, childhood depression, for example, is rare and often not diagnosed until late in life, while conversely, many cases of ADHD in adulthood go undiagnosed because it was long considered a “childhood disorder.” Furthermore, about 70 percent of adults with ADHD also suffer from other mental health conditions—most commonly anxiety disorders and depression.
The fourth session focuses on schizophrenia. Although it occurs relatively rarely, it is of great significance due to its impact on those affected, their families, and their participation in society.
In four one-hour sessions, experts will provide in-depth insight into the latest findings regarding the causes, symptoms, treatment options, and treatment outcomes for these four conditions.
