AMADOKA | THEATER DER WELT

In the organizer's words:

Three touching women's fates, a century of Ukrainian history: Sofia Andrukhovych's epoch-making trilogy of novels on stage.

Sofia Andrukhovych - one of the most distinctive voices in young Ukrainian literature - has created an epoch-making trilogy of novels with AMADOKA. Czech director Dušan David Pařízek brings it to the stage with his outstanding ensemble of Prague actors.
Romana, Uljana and Sofia are the heroines of the story. A novel is dedicated to each of them. The trilogy interweaves their personal fates and spans an entire century of Ukrainian history.
According to Herodotus, AMADOKA is a lake in Europe, recorded for several centuries in ancient and medieval maps, on the territory of present-day Ukraine. It has disappeared without a trace. But how do lakes, worlds and cultures disappear?
Driven by the cruelty of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the production searches for a narrative of how the systematic erasure of existence and memory works. In AMADOKA, memory is a fragile state. It can disappear, be manipulated, shift, but above all it always remains effective.
The theater evening creates a structure of thought and emotion. Scenes do not replace each other logically, but overlap. Times overlap, figures appear as carriers of memories, they are fluid and not self-contained characters. The theater opens up the trilogy in a new dimension. Language, music and physical work create a space in which memories are constantly reassembled and disintegrate again.
The questions posed by Sofia Andrukhovych are not psycho-logical, but political: what remains of a person when history is taken away from them?
Dušan David Pařízek, known for his theater works in Hamburg, Vienna and Zurich, deliberately stages this material in his home country.
This co-production continues the collaboration with numerous partners in the Czech Republic that began in the Capital of Culture Year 2025.
