When the mother of 14-year-old Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko is killed in an American air raid during the final days of World War II, the two are left to fend for themselves in a devastated rural Japan. After a quarrel with the last surviving family member, Seita desperately tries to provide for himself and his sister by stealing food and seeking refuge in an abandoned air-raid shelter. But as their supplies run low, the siblings must cling to fleeting moments of happiness amid their cruel reality.

Based on the personal experiences of survivor Akiyuki Nosaka, *Grave of the Fireflies* is considered one of the most powerful works in the history of animation and film.
