Anmerkungen zu Sebastian Haffner (Literaturtage Recklinghausen 2026)
In the organizer's words:
Notes on Sebastian Haffner – Lecture by Dr. Matthias Kordes and Barbara Ruhnau
Sebastian Haffner is considered one of the most important journalists and historians of the 20th century. With his incisive analyses of German history, his essays, and his radio broadcasts, he shaped political debate in the Federal Republic of Germany for decades. His works—including *Notes on Hitler* —are still regarded today as insightful and accessible examinations of Germany’s past.
The lecture by Dr. Matthias Kordes and Barbara Ruhnau focuses on Haffner’s multifaceted body of work and demonstrates why his texts remain as relevant today as ever. At the same time, it sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of the author: his literary work.
The focus is also on the novel *Abschied* (Farewell), first published in 2025, which Haffner wrote as early as 1932. The story of a young love set against the backdrop of the political crisis of the Weimar Republic offers a surprisingly personal glimpse into an author who became known above all as a perceptive analyst of his time.
An engaging evening of lectures on history, literature, and one of Germany’s most influential political writers.
