When the Soviet Union succeeds in sending the first man into space on April 12, 1961, pressure mounts in the USA. Finally, President John F. Kennedy announces an ambitious plan: a manned flight to the moon is to be realized within the 1960s. Whatever the cost. But tragedy struck in the race for the moon: on January 27, 1967, a tragic accident occurred during a routine test that shook the entire country and cost the lives of three astronauts: Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, the names of the crew of the first manned space mission as part of NASA's Apollo program. They paved the way for all those who would later reach the moon: Neil Armstrong's successful landing on the moon on July 21, 1969 - only around two and a half years after the disaster - would have been impossible without the experiences of the Apollo 1 mission. Former NASA officials and surviving relatives of the deceased provide an emotional insight into the time before and after the astronauts' deaths. From their very personal perspective, the documentary tells the inspiring story of three almost forgotten pioneers who worked with an irrepressible will for their great dream and thus laid the foundation for a great step for mankind.
