Architektur im Film "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen"

In collaboration with thePhase IV Film Gallery, the ZfBK—Center for Building Culture in Saxony—is screening, as part of the “Architecture in Film” series and in conjunction withthe exhibition “Finding a Place: On the Visibility of Jewish Architecture in Saxony,”the film “I Have Lost Myself to the World” by Valerie Madoka Naito, released in 2025.

Using historical postcards, artist Susan Donath retraces the history of the synagogues in Ústí nad Labem (CZ), Dresden, Teplice (CZ), and Opole (PL). She examines how Jewish architecture was present in the visual memory, how it disappeared, and how it can be made visible again. Valérie Madoka Naito’s film approaches the subject by leafing through the albums, thereby creating a different kind of intimacy and poignancy. This familiar ritual is woven into Gustav Mahler’s song cycle of the same name.
