Program 20.Feb.2025

  • "CHAI - a new driving force for sub-mm radio astronomy" (in German) by Dr. Matthias Justen (University of Cologne)
CHAI is being built at the University of Cologne. The receiver has two frequency bands with 64 pixels each. Each pixel functions like a spectrometer with very high frequency resolution, so that astronomical lines can be resolved in all details. The high number of pixels means that star formation regions can be mapped very quickly. The design of the receiver incorporates knowledge and experience from many specialist areas, including precision mechanics, cryogenics, high-frequency technology, electronics, superconductivity and clean room technology. "How many eyes does it take to see dusty young protostars?"
  • "How to build a 6m radio telescope at 5600m in northern Chile" (in English) by Dr. Ronan Higgins (University of Cologne)

The Fred young submm telescope is on it's way to Chile. The telescope was designed and built in Germany. In this talk I will cover telescope design, it's assembly and testing in Germany and it's journey to 5600m in northern Chile.

Program 23.Jan.2025

  • "The baby photo of the universe" - Dr. Tim-Eric Rathjen (University of Cologne)

The cosmic background radiation is often referred to as the "baby photo" of the universe. In this lecture, we will take a journey back almost 14 billion years to understand how this radiation was created and what it tells us today about the composition of the universe. We will look at how astronomers and physicists have used this "snapshot" to determine the proportions of normal matter, dark matter and dark energy and the role these mysterious components play in the evolution of the universe.

  • "A Short History of Astronomy" - Dr. Alexander Wojtczak (University of Cologne)

Astronomy is often referred to as the first science of humankind. In this talk we will explore a selection of critical steps in the development
of this fascinating discipline, from the ancient world up to modernity.

Program 14.Nov.2024

  • "Fraud in science" - Dr. Oskar Asvany (University of Cologne)

A brief history of data manipulation in science, especially in physics (and astronomy)

  • "Neighborhood Watch: What's going down in our Galaxy's Center?" - Myank Singhal (Charles University Prague)

We still have so much to learn about our own Galactic Center, the supermassive black hole, the mysterious collection of dust, and the paradox of youth! The talk will not answer all these questions but will provide an overview of the core of our own galaxy.
