'Playing With A Different Sex' - 45th Anniversary

Au Pairs was formed in late 1978 in Birmingham, UK, in the post-punk era. They were a very popular band, combining entertaining, danceable music with an innovative and, for the time, daring progressive message. Their original line-up consisted of two women and two men, with the aim of showing that women and men could work together as equals. Lesley Woods led the band as frontwoman, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist. Lesley was once described as "one of the most striking women in British rock". Her first album Playing With A Different Sex is a post-punk classic and focuses on gender and other political issues. A critic from The Guardian praised it for its "biting, pertinent lyrics about contemporary life, love and the role of women". The band will regroup in early 2026 when they embark on a UK tour with Lesley Woods and new members. The ratio of two women and two men will remain the same. Au Pairs combine political lyrics with a hard funk-dance-rock idiom that is as relevant today as ever.
