Ausstellung "Du wurdest mit Flügeln geboren..."

What do people make of what they’ve been given? Ulrich Schwecke, a Bremen-based object and photography artist, explores this question in his new exhibition, “You Were Born with Wings….”The title draws on a quote by the 13th-century Persian mystic Rumi and serves as the starting point for an artistic exploration of freedom and limitation, calling and failure, as well as the internal and external forces that shape human action. FromAugust 16 to September 25, 2026, Ulrich Schwecke will presentlarge-formatobjects made from a multifaceted mix of materials at theUnser Lieben FrauenCity Church in Bremen: feathers, wood, fabric, metal, photographs, found objects, bandages, and paint. Along the window walls, the suspended works unfold their impact and open up diverse spaces for interpretation for visitors.

A second central element of the exhibition is a large-scale photo installation in the center of the sanctuary: Approximately 200 black-and-white photographs, each measuring 20 x 30 centimeters, depict children aged two to four —friends of the artist, members of the church congregation, and well-known figures from history and the present, including Greta Thunberg, Donald Trump, Andreas Bovenschulte, and former Werder star Andreas Herzog. “As children, we all look endearing. Later in life, people take very different paths: some dedicate themselves to helping others, while others pursue primarily their own interests, like autocrats. ‘I’m fascinated by the question of why life paths develop so differently,’ says Ulrich Schwecke .”

The exhibition kicks off with an opening service on Sunday, August 16, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Instead of a traditional sermon, the focus will be on a dialogue between Pastor Stephan Kreutz and Ulrich Schwecke. Pianist Joachim Rieke and cellist Julika Kase will provide musical accompaniment for the “vernissage.” Afterward, the object and photography artist will guide visitors through the exhibition and looks forward to engaging with those interested.
