Two artists from two continents, two graduates of 2025 of the Cologne Academy of Media Arts KHM: In Zexuan Zeng'shometown Ganzhou, the "Long March" of the Chinese Red Army started in 1943 as a strategic retreat, in which only 8,000 of 86,000 people reached the goal after 1 year, but which consolidated Mao's claim to leadership and transformed a military defeat into a patriotic founding myth. As a political narrative, it still allows individual suffering to be reinterpreted as a necessary sacrifice for the collective and the suffering to be read as a journey that is expected to lead to success. In 2024, Zexuan Zeng traveled this route and documented the symbolic representations of the "Long March" and his observations of the people along the route. His installation artfully reflects how narratives shape perception and experience and how repetition, images and language create meaning.
On the opening evening, a short reading by the artist will be followed by a sound performance by Colombian sound artist Pedro A. Ramírez.
