In the organizer's words:
Based on the novel by Alina Bronsky
Baba Dunja has returned from the city where she was resettled to her home village—Chernobyl. While the rest of the world fears the radioactive forest fruits in the wake of the reactor accident, the former nurse is building a new life in the no man’s land with like-minded people. Water comes from the well, vegetables from their own garden, and electricity on good days. The birds sing louder than anywhere else, the spiders weave crazy webs, and sometimes a dead person drops by for a chat. Everyone here is old; there’s no place for young, healthy people in this place. While the terminally ill Petrov reads love poems in his hammock and the milkmaid Marja flirts with the nearly 100-year-old Sidorov, Baba Dunja writes letters to her daughter Irina, who is a surgeon in the German Bundeswehr. But then a stranger arrives in the village, and discord settles into the community.
In Baba Dunja’s Last Love, Alina Bronsky brings a lost world back to life. With humor, wisdom, and heartbreak, she tells the story of a village that is no longer meant to exist—and of an extraordinary woman who finds her self-determined paradise in her old age.
