BADLANDS Terrence Malick USA 1973 35 mm English OF 90'
The film begins and ends with Holly (Sissy Spacek). Both casually cool and dreamy, she describes and comments off-screen on the events and stations that force her and her boyfriend Kit (Martin Sheen) to flee from a small town in South Dakota to the badlands of Montana. Her tone remains calm, even though the circumstances of their course become increasingly difficult, the police are hot on their heels - the film is based on a notorious series of murders at the end of the 1950s - and they not only lose their bearings in the vastness of the American landscape, but also themselves. In later films, Malick picked up on some of the themes of his debut, such as the juxtaposition of human violence and scenic beauty as well as the fine line between (American) dream and nightmare. The stylistic device of voiceover also became part of his narrative toolkit.
