Beartooth: Bomb and balm at the same time

Caleb Shomo, founder of the band, first processed the pain of his struggle with his mental health and self-image in music in 2013. Beartooth began as a living document, a diary, a journal of suppressed anger and depression. Alone in his basement studio, screaming and singing, playing all the instruments and producing a series of angry but melodic songs full of reflection and confession, the Ohio native stared into the abyss. At first, he had no intention of returning to the world of heavy music that had burned him as a teenager.

A decade later, the different parts of his work coalesce in title, sound and spirit. As lead singer Caleb turns 30, Beartooth's fifth album 'The Surface' closes this era in 2023. More importantly, it ushers in a new chapter, one filled with surprising optimism and equally honest: depression is a sick, nasty, aggressive disease beneath the surface. Caleb is ready to bask in the light. Like Nine Inch Nails, Beartooth remains a one-person band in the studio. After the introductory songs "Sick" (2013) and "Disgusting" (2014), Beartooth produced their first gold single: "In Between". "Aggressive" (2016) and "Disease" (2018) expanded on the despair and pain, each one step closer to striking a balance between the blood and tears of classic recordings and the glimmer of modernity. Over the years, Caleb recruited a formidable live lineup: bassist Oshie Bichar (since 2014), guitarists Zach Huston and Will Deely, and drummer Connor Denis. Gradually, Beartooth perfected its sound and an attitude that an entire generation of bands have been searching for, equal parts solitary head trip and solemn exorcism. Their blend of colossally catchy choruses and post-hardcore with sweat-soaked metal is unrivaled. Their impact is evident in highly engaged audiences, tours with Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon and A Day To Remember, and the RIAA-certified gold plaque.

Rolling Stone named Beartooth one of the 10 artists you need to know. The enthusiastic response to Caleb's music showed how many people could identify with his struggle for self-acceptance. "Below" (2021) reached the top of the rock and alternative charts and is on several lists of best rock/metal albums of the year. In 2023, the Beartooth catalog was streamed more than 1 billion times across all platforms. Beartooth began as both a bomb and a balm, a clear refusal to suffer in silence and weapons-grade bombast that mixes emotion with noise-rock mayhem. Other bands play the game of "crushing riffs and catchy hooks," but this music is the difference between life and death, and now, a kind of life after death while it's still here. The band, which Forbes says is "on track to become the latest arena headliner," is now one step closer.
