At Bergson: Experience the new solo exhibition "KALO" by Janine Mackenroth

The exhibition KALO examines and reflects on the multi-layered meanings of "coal" - as a material, as a colloquial term for money and as a culturally charged metaphor. The artist Janine Mackenroth takes up this field of associations in her solo exhibition at the Bergson Gallery and relates it to the former coal silos as an exhibition space. She works with coal itself, develops her own perfume and integrates unorthodox materials into her artistic practice - from nail polish to shredded euro banknotes.

Mackenroth's works deal with the material flows of our economic system and the possibilities of their reinterpretation. They deal with questions of value, capital, social inequality and sustainability.

Her paintings are created using plant-based nail polish in banknote colors, among other things, while her stainless steel works are fired with organic propane gas.

For the fragrance work "Eau du capitalisme", Mackenroth commissioned ChatGPT to design the smell of capitalism. And among many other works, you can discover the "gender star", now banned in some official languages, which was hammered into the walls of the exhibition rooms as a metal object.

At the end of the exhibition, you can purchase the "BABYLONIAN BLACK" nail polish developed especially for KALO - a matt black shade that refers to a 5,000-year-old practice in Babylonia, where the coloring of nails with black charcoal was reserved exclusively for men as a symbol of their high social status.
