We thought we could fly! Hidden behind this title in the volume edited by Matthias Jügler are literary, humorous and surprising contributions by twenty of the most renowned writers of our time. Their stories give a face to animals and plants that have disappeared or become extinct and bring them out of anonymity and into our consciousness. Among other things, we meet an amorous werewolf, the giant vampire once feared as a Mayan deity and the almost extinct Darwin's nose frogs. Jügler and his co-authors Caroline Wahl, Melanie Raabe and Katrin Schumacher present the volume and their animal stories and celebrate the power of literary imagination in the face of a major ecological problem. The foreword formulates a hope: "How wonderful it would be if the stories could teach us to take better care of what is not yet irretrievably lost."
