A requiem, i.e. a mass for the dead - but much more than that: with his massive "German Requiem," Johannes Brahms not only transcended the boundaries of liturgically bound church music. Actually, the work, which is more reminiscent of an oratorio than a mass, points far beyond the ties to denominations, even to the sacred setting. Brahms created a personal confrontation with the inevitable fate of death, which unites all people.
