The first month of the new year is dominated by the Munich Philharmonic's Brahms cycle, for which honorary conductor Zubin Mehta takes to the podium for four concert series. In his autobiography, Mehta reveals why he wanted to become a conductor when he was young: to conduct the four symphonies of Johannes Brahms, among others! He has fulfilled this wish several times in his incomparable career. The Munich audience can now share in his views on Brahms' oeuvre, collected over an entire conducting career.
At the start of the Brahms cycle, Lisa Batiashvili and Gautier Capuçon merge into an "eight-stringed giant violin", as Brahms once humorously commented, in the closely interwoven dialogues between the solo voices in the double concerto. Brahms delighted his contemporaries with his Third Symphony, above all Antonín Dvořák: "What wonderful melodies can be found there! It is pure love and it makes your heart soar".
