BRANT BJORK has been at the epicenter of Californian desert rock for over a quarter of a century. From his beginnings as a drummer and composer for the legendary early albums of Kyuss, to the groundbreaking fuzz songs of Fu Manchu from 1994-2001, producing other bands, putting together offshoot projects, starting his solo career as a singer, guitarist and bandleader over the last 20 years, founding his own record label and much more. His story is an intricate tale of tireless, unwavering creativity.

"Elektrik Ram", the latest album from South African megalith RUFF MAJIK, is the kind of audio palate cleanser we all crave from time to time. It transports listeners back to a sepia-toned era when bell bottoms and fuzzy bass were all the rage. The guys in MAJIK take a familiar template and infuse it with their unique attitude and stoner-esque sensibility. The horned child known as RUFF MAJIK emerged from the primordial ooze when the band moved from the historic city of Lydenburg to capital city Pretoria in 2012, where they honed their craft for a few years before finally entering the studio to record for the first time. Now, with a string of EPs and two highly acclaimed albums under their belt, not to mention a megaton of local and international touring, they now return with perhaps their most important work: "Elektrik Ram". All the necessary MAJIK hallmarks are marked in thick, bold felt-tip pen - sludgy, distorted riffs, vast soundscapes, dark imagery that perfectly complements the delicious cacophony and tasty sound bites that add infinite swathes of color. This is what you expect from the band, their signature sound that never fails. But there's a lot more going on here, showing the evolution of a band maturing and embracing their future with one eye firmly fixed on the past.
