Bricknasty

Bricknasty was originally formed from a chance encounter on SoundCloud between frontman and guitarist Fatboy and producer Cillian McCauley. With the addition of Dara Abdurahman (bass), Korey Thomas (drums) and Louis Younge (saxophone/keyboard), the project evolved into a full-fledged band.

With their infectious energy, soulful chords and smooth, lilting vocals, Bricknasty's music moves effortlessly between RnB, neo-soul, jazz and psych, with influences from D'Angelo, MF Doom and Timbaland. As the band members grew together, their music evolved - each contributing to the existing demos as well as the overall identity and vision of the collective. Their palpable harmony and musical synchronicity is particularly evident in their live performances, which generated a lot of word of mouth in Dublin and beyond.

At the heart of Bricknasty's story are the experiences of frontman Fatboy, who grew up in the Dublin suburb of Ballymun - an area known for social problems such as unemployment, high crime rates and drug abuse and closely associated with the heroin epidemic in Dublin in the 1980s and 1990s. External prejudice further reinforced this reputation, meaning residents rarely had the opportunity to present their own views.

"There was a lot of coverage in the news at the time about Ballymun and the people who lived there," Fatboy recalls. "But anyone who lived in those blocks of flats at the time will tell you that it was impossible to live there and that the sense of community was very strong."

Fatboy grew up between two of the tower blocks known as Ballymun Flats. His home unintentionally became a symbol of the area's bad reputation. The tower blocks had been built in the early 1960s to accommodate the growing urban population and were unceremoniously demolished in the early 2000s to make way for new developments. The price of this "redevelopment project" was the expropriation and displacement of the residents.
