Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist meet in the lonely mountain regions of Wyoming. As simple cowboys, they herd sheep and become emotionally and physically closer in the vastness of the landscape. A secret adventure turns into a lifelong, suppressed longing. Both try to lead a life with a wife and family - but they never let go of each other.
Annie Proulx tells of taciturn men, mountains and overwhelming feelings. When it was first published, her story broke with the conventions of the western genre and reckoned with a hard, male world. A poetic play about what happens when you are not allowed to be who you are and cannot love who you want.
