This volume is the first to comprehensively examine the history of archives and archivists in Lower Saxony and Bremen during and after the National Socialist era. How the dictatorship of the Nazi state, the Nazi racial ideology, the synchronization of politics and society as well as the Second World War affected archives and their personnel in Lower Saxony and Bremen has only been partially understood until now. It becomes clear how much the Nazi ideology changed the role of archives and archival practice and how strong the institutional and personnel continuities were in the National Socialist system of rule and in the post-war period. The Wesermünde town archive and the eventful biography of the first town archivist Hans Kischnick will also be analyzed and reassessed against the background of the research that is now known.
