Bulgarian Voices Berlin is a female vocal ensemble dedicated to traditional Bulgarian polyphonic singing. The ensemble was founded in 2009 by Boryana Velichkova and is still under her direction today. With a focus on Bulgarian vocal techniques and regional styles, their practice is characterized by close harmonies, dissonances and complex ornamentation. The ensemble's repertoire draws on traditions from different parts of the country, reflecting a diversity of vocal forms that have emerged in specific local contexts and historical contexts. Bulgarian Voices Berlin understands these songs as a living practice beyond pure folklore. They preserve their technical precision and embed them in contemporary performative contexts. The focus is on the physical dimension of singing and the collective voice, which weaves itself into dense, multi-layered sound structures through polyphony.
